Badplaas (eManzana)

At the foot of the Nelshoogte Pass and set in the magically named Dhlumudhlumu Mountains, Badplaas has long been a popular holiday destination for South Africans. Enjoy a healing swim in the hot springs, take a day out in the surrounding mountains or pay a visit to the Songimvelo Nature Reserve.

There’s also fishing in the hillside dams, lovely terrain for walks, and active farms that produce fresh produce for sale. With Swaziland and the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal just around the corner, Badplaas is an important gateway town to our region.

Top attractions

  • The Songimvelo Nature Reserve is a provincial park, probably best known as the location where the film The Ghost and the Darkness was shot. The film told the story of a pride of man-eating lions in the Tsavo region of Kenya. Now that the lions are gone, Songimvelo is a fabulous spot for a day out and picnic
  • The district’s biggest draw is its healing sulphurous hot springs which surge out of the ground at a rate of 30 000 litres per hour at a temperature of 50 degrees Celsius

Did you know?

  • eManzana - means “healing water”.  It is said that in about 1876, the Swazi Chief presented this spring (apparently in gratitude) to a hunter, Jacob de Clerq.
