Events and festivals

A number of exciting local events take place in the Kruger Lowveld region each year. Here is a small taste of what to expect when you visit:

 

January

XCM Mountain Bike Challenge – Barberton

Held annually on the last Saturday of January for the past 17 years, the Barberton XCM Mountain Bike Challenge takes competitors up into the ancient Makhonjwa Mountains, through nature reserves and close to the Swaziland border with some challenging climbs, exciting single track and spectacular views of the De Kaap Valley.  

February

MTN National Mountain Bike Series - Sabie

For 15 years the Sabie Classic has become the benchmark Enduro Mountain Bike race by which all others are judged. Over 3000 riders will descend upon the small Mpumalanga town to experience South Africa's "Mecca" of mountain biking over two days.

March

Mpumalanga Wine Show – Nelspruit/Mbombela

Presented by wine authority Michael Fridjhon and the team who organise the country’s premier national and regional wine festivals, Nelspruit and White River wine lovers will again be treated to a prestigious array of award-winning producers

April

Sasol Rally – Sabie and Nelspruit

The Sasol Rally is reputedly one of the toughest rally events on the South African Rally Championship calendar. It is held in the in the forests and mountains of the Lowveld and is an exciting spectator event.

Panorama Cycle Tour

Panorama Cycle Tour was the first ever four day road stage race for teams of two. The race takes place in and around White River.

May

Uplands Festival – White River 

What started as a small fundraising event for Uplands School (Preparatory and College), the Uplands Festival has grown into a major regional event attracting over 10 000 visitors. In addition to the usual entertainment and stalls, there is a mountain bike race, art exhibition and equestrian show.

June

Komatipoort Prawn Festival

Feast on freshly caught prawns washed down by ice-cold beer in a festive environment where the whole family is catered for. This three-day event includes stalls, exhibitions, activities and fun for everyone.

Barberton Paragliding Open

The Barberton Paragliding Open attracts paragliders from across the globe, offering spectators the opportunity to see some fantastic flying in a beautifully scenic area.

July

Innibos Nelspruit

Innibos is a festival of art, music and theatre that attracts hundreds of musicians, actors and artists and more than 100 000 visitors each year. Craft and food stalls, restaurants and kids' entertainment complement the festival's main attractions, making it a true family event.

Jock Cycle Classic Road Race

South Africa's toughest one-day stage road race takes place in the Nelspruit area.

Hoedspruit Wildsfees

Originally started as game auction in 1987, the Hoedspruit Wildsfees has become a regular event on the local calendar, despite the fact that the auction is no longer held. The festival comprises entertainment, fundraisers and live demonstrations by wildlife organisations in the area.

 

August

Skukuza Half-Marathon

Attracting around 1 000 runners each year, the Kruger Park Half-Marathon is run in and around the village of Skukuza in the heart of the Kruger National Park. Most of the run takes place in the park itself, adding an extra element of excitement and making this a unique event on the runner's calendar.

September

Lowveld Croc Canoe Marathon

The Crocodile River flowing through Mpumalanga offers a thrilling combination of technically demanding rapids and weirs, set in the breathtaking beauty of the Lowveld. This A+ grade race brings paddlers back year after year. Try it, and see why it has achieved cult status among its regular participants.

October

3 Towers Mountain Bike Stage Race

Three days, three towers, big mountains and endless single track.

November

Kaapsehoop Marathon

The "Run with the Wild Horses Kaapsehoop 3 in 1 Race" offers runners the option of participating in a 10km race, half-marathon or full marathon in Mpumalanga. Walkers are welcome to participate in the 10km and half-marathon events. The event is an early qualifying event for the Comrades and Two Oceans marathons.

Alfred Dunhill Golf Tournament – Leopard Creek, Malalane

The Alfred Dunhill Championship will be an official co-sanctioned Order of Merit event on the PGA European Tour and Sunshine Tour.

Sabie Experience Stage Race MTB

The four-day Sabie Experience Mountain Bike Race, based on the Cape Epic MTB stage race, is one of the toughest and most beautiful races in Mpumalanga.
