At the foot of the Nelshoogte Pass and set in the magically named Dhlumudhlumu Mountains, Badplaas has long been a popular holiday destination for South Africans. Enjoy a healing swim in the hot springs, take a day out in the surrounding mountains or pay a visit to the Songimvelo Nature Reserve.
There’s also fishing in the hillside dams, lovely terrain for walks, and active farms that produce fresh produce for sale. With Swaziland and the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal just around the corner, Badplaas is an important gateway town to our region.
- Songimvelo is a provincial park, probably best known for the filming of The Ghosts in the Darkness where it ‘played’ Tsavo in the story of the man-eating lions. A fabulous spot for a day out and picnic (now that the lions are gone).
- The district’s biggest draw is its healing sulphurous hot springs which surge out of the ground at a rate of 30000 litres per hour at a temperature of 50 degrees centigrade.
