Shik Shack is your one-stop-shop for everything awesome and community inspired. We are all about social integration, pro-poor tourism and an amazing grassroots inspired African experience.
Shik Shack Community Backpackers & Tours is based only 30 km from the Orpen Gate of Kruger National Park, and a stones throw from the Blyde River Canyon. We are located on the edge of Sigagule village, and are a grassroots community based cultural tourism experience and destination. We offer a chance to engage with the community and see life in post Apartheid South Africa in an interactive and fun way - all the while knowing that your tourism spend is making a big difference in this poor rural community. Spend a half day with local community project Nourish teaching English, or planting vegetables, go fishing in the village dam, or see the village on foot on a Walking Tour - all our tour and interaction options offer an immersion experience that will allow you a real chance to connect, understand and give back to the heart of Africa.
Or simply use Shik Shack as a perfect base camp to explore the Kruger to Canyon Biosphere area. We offer eco camping spaces - where you can bring your own tent, or hire one of ours. Solar showers, composting toilets, and gas/fireside cooking in our Eco Common room give you a quiet experience of our ethos to live lightly on the planet. Sit around a fire and watch the sunset, listen to lions roaring at night from nearby reserves, and simply disconnect - and connect to Africa. Our common room is off-grid and made of Eco bricks and clay, emphasising our green footprint and our eco-commitment. Your overnight camping stay or tour with us will leave you indelibly changed by your African experience.
