Once a ranger post, established in 1928 by the Kruger National Park’s first warden James Stevenson-Hamilton, the recently upgraded Tshokwane Trading Post and Picnic Site situated on the H1 road, about halfway between Skukuza and Satara, is a popular spot for visitors to stretch their legs and relax in the shade.

The Trading Post offers freshly-made meals; treats, such as carrot cake, milk tart and muffins, baked daily; and its own Tshokwane blend of coffee. A small shop sells drinks, snacks and curios.

Tables and benches are plentiful and most have good shade. There are also clean restrooms and kitchenettes. Gas braais are available for rent at a nominal rate for those die-hard Kruger visitors who just love to braai.

Tshokwane is an excellent birding spot, where the birds are very tame and will approach to within touching distance. Tree squirrels are equally tame and not embarrassed to walk over to your plate for get a nibble or two. Do not feed or touch the birds and animals.
